South Plains residents have plenty of opportunities to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday – both before and after July 4th on Saturday – with a variety of events planned around the region.
Celebrations featuring fireworks and drone shows, live music, contests food and more are on tap across the region starting Thursday Independence Day celebrations in Plainview and Brownfield, followed by the return of Lubbock’s 4th on Broadway festival and Wolfforth’s 4th on the 5th on Sunday.
Friday, July 3, will bring events in Slaton and Lamesa along with the annual fireworks display at Buffalo Springs Lake, with wristbands for that event on sale at the Lake’s administration office.
Here’s a look at what’s to come:
Lubbock 4th on Broadway
Lubbock’s annual 4th on Broadway, now in its 36th year, will step off with a parade Saturday morning along Broadway in downtown Lubbock. The afternoon and evening events for 4th on Broadway will take place at the South Plains Fairgrounds near Broadway and Avenue A. H-E-B’s Parade will step off at 9:45 a.m. from Avenue M, head east down Broadway to MLK Boulevard.
Later in the day, GECU’s Picnic Under the Stars, Leprino’s Kids Area Hosted by Bass Pro Shops, and Gorilla Law Firm Law-Palooza Evening Concert will now all take place at the South Plains Fairgrounds.
Public parking will be available at the following locations:

Plainview’ fireworks and park celebration
Plainview’s Chamber of Commerce is helping organize the community’s 44th annual fireworks show and celebration Thursday evening, July 2, in Regional Runningwater Draw Park/Kidsville Park.
The community is invited to come out to the park after 6 p.m., where there will be food trucks, other vendors and entertainment. People are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. Fireworks will begin shortly after dusk and last about 20 minutes.
This celebration will be in lieu of the Red, White & Moo dairy festival, which was not pursued this year due to logistical and travel issues with area dairy producers, according to the chamber.
Brownfield fireworks and concerts
A variety of festivities are planned starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 2, in Brownfield’s Coleman Park. The event will feature a golf cart parade and car show as well as food, live music and a fireworks display after dark. Day Late Dollar Short will perform at 6:30 p.m. followed by The Rick Carr Band starting at 8:30 p.m. More information is available by calling City Hall at 806-637-4547.
Lamesa Block Party on July 3
Lamesa’s 4th of July Block Party celebration kicks off with a parade at 7 p.m. Friday, July 3, according to the Lamesa Chamber of Commerce. The event will center around Forrest Park, 900 South Houston, and will feature an evening full of events and activities including a live DJ, a hotdog eating contest and more. For vendor information, parade entries, or hot dog eating contest registration, call the Chamber at 806-872-2181.

Buffalo Springs Lake is once again hosting its annual fireworks show, this time coming after dark Friday evening, July 3. Admission is $25 per adult, with two children 15 and under (per group) admitted for free, with additional children admitted at $5 each. Pre-purchased wristbands are $20 for adults and are available June 30-July 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lake’s administration office.
