BROWN TWP. − A 70-year-old Sandy Township man was killed June 24 in a three-vehicle crash on state Route 43 in Carroll County about a mile west of Malvern, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

Lee D. Meadows, a driver of one of the three vehicles, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the approximately 4:56 p.m. crash, the Patrol said.

His passenger, Emily N. Meadows, 39, of Malvern, was brought to Aultman Hospital in Canton. Her condition was unknown. A driver of another vehicle, Ronald R. Romano III, 31, of Malvern, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from his vehicle in the collision and suffered serious injuries. An ambulance took him to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital in Canton. A driver of a third vehicle, a 34-year-old Brown Township man who was wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Lee Meadows, who lived near Waynesburg and was wearing a seat belt, was driving a 2012 Subaru Outback east on Route 43 near Mulwayne Drive NW, the patrol said. It’s not clear if Emily Meadows his passenger was wearing a seat belt.

The 34-year-old Brown Township man was driving a 2019 Ram 1500 west on Route 43. Romano was driving a 2016 Volkswagen Golf west on Route 43 behind the Ram 1500. Romano attempted to pass the Ram 1500 on the two-lane road, by going into the eastbound lane and got into a head-on collision with the Outback driven by Lee Meadows, the patrol said. Both vehicles collided with the Ram 1500.

The Outback overturned onto its roof. The Ram 1500 went off the north side of the road.

The patrol said it believes excessive speed played a role in the fatal crash. Patrol troopers are still investigating to try to determine the cause of the collision.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Great Trail Fire Department, Brown Township Fire Department, Quad Ambulance Service, EMT Ambulance Service, Carroll County Coroner’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation and two towing services were among those who responded.
