Storm damage addressed by city manager

City Manager Scott Adkins used his time during his department head report to the commission to talk about a storm in the city on June 11. He said it hit a three by ten block section of the city leaving two homes uninhabitable and a half dozen others with significant damage. “I want to thank the department of public works, of course the fire department and the police department that were out at 2:30 a.m. in the morning dealing with this,” Adkins said. “Thankfully no one was injured, it could have been more devastating.”

He also thanked the residents for their assistance with clean-up and their patience while the city responded and made the storm cleanup a priority.

Fresh website design for city

A new city website was launched on June 16 and City Clerk Jason Bell said users should see some changes and better functionality with it soon. He asks that users be patient as the changes are put in place and converting some items is taking a minute. “We’ll get there and get those corrections made,” Bell said.

Special meeting on June 25

The commission will meet on Thursday, June 25 at 5:30 p.m. regarding the Clean Water State Revolving Fund Grant from the state. Bids for the project are being received and opened by June 23 and they have to be approved and to the state by July 7 and the city won’t be meeting again until July 16. Commissioners Trish May and Sean O’Brien said they are unavailable for the meeting. Attorney Robert Davis said he wanted to underscore the importance of having the meeting and not letting the state funds slip away. Even with the two commissioners absent the remaining officials said they could attend the June 25 meeting as they will have a quorum.

Mural for the beach approved

A local art group, Artisans Mixed Media Art (AMMA) Local Art Group, made a request to paint a mural on the exterior of the restroom building at the city’s beach. City Manager Scott Adkins said the mural would be like a postcard image with a beach ball and beach water front that visitors could stand in front of for photographs. “Given the opportunity to create this mural will showcase Marine City and bring more positive exposure to the community through the Arts,” AMMA Art Group Coordinator Mauri Sutton wrote in a letter to the commission in the meeting packet.
