Letter: When it comes to tortillas at Texas Tech, will the true fans please stand up?

Dear Editor & Red Raiders – This Saturday we will be in The Jones for the first time under the new tortilla ban. I’ve been listening to a lot of chatter, including a news report with students on campus chiming in, as people voice opinions over the ban. Some are mad – some are pledging to do it anyway – and some don’t understand the tradition in the first place.

Unfortunately, this tradition was given boundaries at the beginning of the season, which have escalated to a ban. The very reason this tradition has now advanced to a ban is because the boundaries were not respected. Fans have sole responsibility for this.

The ban holds a whole new level of consequences for this team and this university if the ban is disregarded and not followed.

No one will have to wonder who the true fans are and who the narcissists are that want it to be all about them. True fans – I hope you will take it to a new level and help defend The Jones and the Red Raiders.

I hope you stand with me on speaking up during the game when the narcissists are sure to show up … and they will.

Why? Because some truly live by the attitude “they can’t tell me what to do, rules don’t apply to me, and what are they going to do about it?!”

It’s not about tradition anymore, it’s about rules put in place by people in positions to make them, which is what happens in life from time to time.

They made the decision to ban because the boundaries were not respected, and the stakes are much higher now. If the ban is not respected, anyone throwing tortillas will cost this team much more than they deserve to pay.

We have a team and a coaching staff that has worked their butt off to be where they are.

If you are a true fan, you will do whatever it takes to support their hard work and success, and you will have every right to share in their celebration.

If you choose to embrace the tortilla over the team you will also choose the consequence.

This will not be a consequence you alone will pay; this will be a consequence the team and the university will also pay.

Trust me, you will not win. I hope you are removed, I hope you do lose your privilege of attending sporting events for the remainder of the academic year, and I hope you will be charged a fine that will be only a drop in the bucket compared to the $100,000 charged to Texas Tech… Why do I hope this?

Because I don’t want your narcissistic stupidity to cost my team penalties, victories, possible championships, and money that could be better spent elsewhere.

True fans, it’s time to stand together and support our Red Raiders!

Will the true fans please stand up…

Wreck Em,

Tammy Wyatt – Lubbock
