El Paso woman dies in early morning SUV crash on West Side

A 25-year-old woman died at the scene of a single-vehicle crash on the West Side, El Paso police disclosed.

Missy Roberta Aguilar, of East El Paso, was driving a 2012 Ford Escape when she crashed on a curve on Shadow Mountain Drive by Silver Springs Drive at 2:22 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, El Paso Police Department spokeswoman Stephanie Shields stated in a news release on Monday, June 29.

In a message to the news media on Saturday, an El Paso police spokesperson had stated that two people had been transported to a hospital but failed to mention that someone had died at the crash scene.

The police Special Traffic Investigations Unit determined that the Ford was northbound when Aguilar lost control at the curve and hit a curb, causing the SUV to go over landscaping outside a business, police said.

The vehicle then crashed into a metal trash can and two different rock walls before coming to a stop, police reported. Debris from the crash struck a Mini Cooper and a Kia Optima parked nearby.

Two passengers in the Ford, Jennifer Campos, of Horizon City, and Jonathan Rizo, of Anthony, Texas, both 25 years old, were taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries, police said. Aguilar died at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation, but speed was a contributing factor, police stated. This was the 23rd traffic-related death in El Paso this year, according to police statistics.
