Iowa is seeing some extreme temperatures and possible severe weather during the last week of June.
Temperatures are forecast to exceed 90 degrees throughout the week of June 29, with the heat index surpassing 100 on several days. Here’s what to know.
How hot will the Des Moines metro get?
By noon on Monday, June 29, Des Moines could see the heat index reach 109 degrees, with wind gusts up to 32 mph. The heat index will remain above 105 degrees into the evening, with triple-digit values spanning from Atlantic to Waterloo at 6 p.m.
On Tuesday, June 30, the heat index will remain in the 100s but not as high, peaking at 106 at noon, according to the National Weather Service Office in Des Moines.
The heat index could reach 100 degrees or higher in Des Moines each day through Friday. By the Fourth of July, the heat index is expected to dip just slightly to 99 degrees.
Where are the heat warnings and advisories in Iowa?
An extreme heat warning covers much of Iowa and is in effect through Tuesday evening. The NWS notes nighttime conditions will provide little relief as temperatures will remain in the upper 70s and 80s.
The next time the daytime high in Des Moines is expected to be below 90 degrees is Sunday, July 5 (87).
What other severe weather is possible in Iowa?
Parts of northwest Iowa extending from Ida Grove to Rock Rapids, are under a slight or Level 2 (out of 5) risk of severe storms, according to the NWS. Storms are expected to begin at 9 p.m. and last till 6 a.m. Tuesday.
A stretch of north-central Iowa is under a marginal, or Level 1, risk, while Des Moines poses little risk other than some general thunderstorms.
