A Newark man was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to escaping from police after a May court appearance in the area.
Calvin J. Jenkins, 21, entered the plea June 26 in Licking County Common Pleas Court, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Tyler McCoy told The Advocate. Judge Thomas Marcelain sentenced him to the six-month term and ordered two years of post-release control if the Adult Parole Authority says it’s necessary, court records show.
The Advocate reached out to Jenkins’ attorney for comment June 29.
Jenkins fled from police around 11 a.m. April 29 from Licking County Municipal Court, leading to a districtwide lockdown of Newark City Schools. He was in court that day after violating a protection order in a separate case.
After the April 29 hearing, a deputy walked Jenkins to his cruiser in the underground area of municipal court. Jenkins ran from him after seeing the garage door open and the deputy couldn’t catch him, according to court records.
Police arrested Jenkins around noon April 29 near Locust and Fifth streets, Sheriff Randy Thorp said at the time. Newark City Schools implemented an awareness-level lockdown an hour earlier. Classes continued but no one was allowed in or out of district buildings until the lockdown lifted around noon.
