Former Nevada hospital converted into 60-unit apartment complex

A former hospital in Nevada is home to 60 modern apartments and ready for tenants.

The 75-year-old former Story County Medical Center campus at 630 6th Street was recently transformed into the Nevada Flats, developed by The Capstone Group, Inc.

The Story County Medical Center worked with the Nevada Economic Development Commission to find a developer to renovate the former hospital for another use, which has been vacant since 2024, when a senior care center departed.

Construction started with removal and partial demolition midway through 2025, and after nearly a year, the renovation is complete.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on June 25 to celebrate the occasion.

Capstone Group President Mike Michaud thanked everyone who helped bring the project to life, including Nevada residents.

“Whether neighbors were for, against it or just kind of agnostic, we got a lot of good suggestions and a lot of hard questions that all worked to make this a harder project then it otherwise would have been,” Michaud said.

Nevada Flats will offer a variety of living units

The city of Nevada mulled several options for the old hospital campus. They first considered demolishing the various buildings on site, but balked at the $2.6 million price tag during discussions in 2022.

To make way for the apartments, the Nevada City Council voted 4-1 in May 2025 to change the property’s zoning, despite some concerns from multiple Nevada residents about potential parking and traffic problems.

The Nevada Flats will offer 42 single-family apartments, seven two-bedrooms, nine studios, and two ADA-compliant units.

Each apartment will have its own power meter and its own heating and cooling settings.

The complex will also feature two courtyards: one between the west wing and the main hospital, and the other fenced off as a private dog park.

The building’s basement will include 60 storage units for tenants.

Studio apartments are available for as low as $810 per month, while one-bedroom apartments are available for $855. Several apartments are vacant and available for rent.

Former Story County Medical Center served residents for decades

The 75-year-old former hospital was split into three facilities − a medical clinic, a hospital and senior care − all of which are vacant. Story Medical Senior Care was the last to depart, occupying one of the buildings until 2024. That facility is now housed at 710 S. 19th Street in Nevada on the campus of the current Story County Medical Center.
