Two people died and four others were injured in a head-on collision after an SUV crossed into oncoming traffic on Interstate 10 near Clint, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said.
The two-vehicle wreck occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 29, in the eastbound lanes of I-10 near mile marker 42, stated a news release by sheriff’s spokeswoman Priscilla I. Contreras.
I-10 East has been closed for several hours, with traffic diverted south at the Clint exit and then east onto North Loop Drive. The eastbound highway remained closed as of 3:30 p.m. Monday, according to Texas Department of Transportation highway cameras.
An investigation by the sheriff’s Special Traffic Investigators found that a silver 2021 Lincoln Navigator was westbound on I-10 when, for unclear reasons, the SUV veered off the highway, crossed the median and collided head-on with a gray 2025 Nissan Rogue that was going east, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
Timothy Head, 78, of Van Horn, Texas, who was driving the Navigator, was transported to an El Paso hospital, where he died of his injuries, Contreras said.
Barbra Thacker, 67, of Vernon, Texas, who was a passenger in the Nissan, was also transported to a hospital, where she died of her injuries, Contreras said. Vernon is in northwest Texas, about halfway between Amarillo and Dallas-Fort Worth.
Four additional people from both vehicles were transported to El Paso hospitals with injuries that weren’t believed to be life threatening, the Sheriff’s Office stated. An investigation into the crash continues.
