Canutillo High School infielder Ian Melendez has committed to play college baseball at Rice University in Houston.
Rice competes in the American Athletic Conference. Melendez is the younger brother of the “Hispanic Titanic” Ivan Melendez, who plays professional baseball in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and is a former star at Coronado High School and the University of Texas Longhorns.
Ian hit. 377 this season as a senior with 10 doubles, two triples, four homers and 21 RBI and helped lead the Eagles to the state playoffs this season.
El Paso boxer Nayeli ‘La Bikina’ Rodriguez gets draw
El Paso pro boxer Nayeli “La Bikina” Rodriguez fought to a four-round draw with Natalie Nat “No Love” Dove on Friday at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.
Rodriguez and Dove fought the fight at 115 pounds. All three judges scored the same 38-38.
Fort Hancock High tennis players make state
Fort Hancock High School will send four athletes to the 2025 UIL state tennis tournament scheduled for May 15-16 in San Antonio.
The boys doubles team of Manuel Jimenez and Ethan Alvarez qualified for state by placing second at regionals as did the mixed doubles team of Patrick Hernandez and Nevaeh Gonzalez.
