El Paso County sheriff’s traffic investigators arrested a driver suspected in a hit-and-run collision that killed a motorcyclist over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Fernando Villa, 33, of El Paso, died at a hospital from injuries suffered in a collision that occurred about 9:40 p.m. Sunday, May 24, at the intersection of Montana Avenue and Buntline Drive in Montana Vista, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release by spokeswoman Priscilla I. Contreras.
Villa was riding a motorcycle eastbound on Montana when a vehicle heading west attempted to make a left turn onto Buntline Drive. The vehicle failed to yield and struck the motorcycle, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
The vehicle left the scene but was later located by special traffic investigators with assistance from the sheriff’s Special Operations Unit.
The alleged hit-and-run driver, Jose Orlando Ruiz Rodriguez, 18, was arrested on charges of collision involving death and tampering with evidence, sheriff’s officials said.
Ruiz remains held on a total bond of $110,000 at the El Paso County Jail in Downtown as of Tuesday, May 26.
No attorney is listed for Ruiz in online court records.
