Which Portage track & field athletes have qualified for state?

Portage County had a slew of regional track and field qualifiers last week. Now, local teams are competing at various regional tournaments across Northeast Ohio.

Division II (North Royalton)

Participating local teams: Aurora, Roosevelt

Aurora had a regional tournament to remember, with its girls scoring 61 points to win the team title (edging runner-up Wadsworth by six points) and its boys finishing fourth.

A year ago, the Greenmen had three state entries. This year, Aurora has a whopping 15. That includes Ella Cicero — after making state in 2024 but not 2025 — qualifying in all four of her events and earning regional runner-up honors in the 400.

Roosevelt similarly went from one state entry in 2025 to four this season, including Kyle McQueen’s regional title in the 110 hurdles. That was one of three Division II regional titles locally alongside Aurora’s Luke McGovern (200 dash) and Nathan Eminian (3,200 run).

Division IV (Austintown)

A year ago, Julia Wheeler made the state track meet for the first time and took a trip to the podium while there, finishing fifth in the 3,200. The Southeast senior will have the chance to run far more this year at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, qualifying in all four of her events. She was the regional champion in the 3,200, the regional runner-up in the 800 and 1,600 and also part of the Pirates’ runner-up 3,200 relay. She’ll be joined in the 1,600 and 3,200 by another local rising star: Garfield freshman Lina Kaufman, who took third in both events at Austintown.
