The Reds.TV broadcast mentioned during the team’s series finale June 17 against the New York Mets that it was Reds Hall of Fame shortstop Dave Concepción’s 77th birthday.
Play-by-play broadcaster John Sadak asked analyst Barry Larkin about how Concepción helped him as a fielder.
“Davey was telling me I was playing a little too tentatively,” Larkin said during the broadcast. “Kinda pulling away from the baseball. He told me I have to eat, like you’re eating the baseball. ‘I want you to chew on this baseball.’ Literally, like get your mouth down there like you’re going to chew. It’s just about body posture, that he was trying to tell me in his own way. … Davey helped me with everything.”
Sadak mentioned that Concepción and Larkin won championships with the Reds 14 years apart.
“Man, we need another one,” Larkin said. “This city when you’re playing in the postseason, it is something to behold. It is amazing. It’s like the whole city is just − I get so jealous when I see the Knicks. You guys will be in New York for the celebration. I get jealous to see these cities be able to celebrate with their team a championship. This city deserves one.”
