Severe storms on the way to Greater Cincinnati, flood watch issued

Greater Cincinnati may be pelted with severs storms overnight as much of the Midwest is set to experience an abnormal mid-June system, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Showers and thunderstorms will move into the region the evening of June 17 and continue through the early morning of June 18, the weather service said. The system could bring damaging winds, and large hail and a few tornadoes “cannot be ruled out.”

A flood watch has been issued for all of southeast Indiana, Northern Kentucky, and Hamilton, Butler and Clermont counties in Ohio as the storms could produce heavy downpours. The weather service advises against driving at night during flooding.

The main timeframe for severe threat is from 8 p.m. June 17 to 5 a.m. June 18, the weather service said. The showers and storms are expected to begin before 4 a.m. in the heart of Cincinnati, with possible rainfall amounts of half-inch to three quarters of inch.

In response to the weather, Duke Energy is preparing for damaging winds, the company said in an email. Its technicians and tree crews will be ready to respond.

Tornadoes are expected to pose a more significant threat in Indiana and Illinois as the line of storms moves from west to east.
