Wayne County Library's summer reading club offers prizes

The Wayne County Public Library is offering its free Summer Reading Club beginning May 26.

This year’s program, Unearth a Story, allows participants to win prizes the more they read. In addition, every location hosts free special summer programs and events all summer long.

Why is Summer Reading so Important?

Children who do not read during the summer may lose up to three months of reading progress, and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect. By the end of the 6th grade, children who consistently lose skills over the summer will be up to two years behind their peers, according to the community announcement.

Even reading just five books over the summer can help prevent learning loss. Reading just 10 – 15 minutes a day as part of your routine can increase exposure to language and lead to increased skill development and retention. The more children read, the better their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

How to Participate

Summer Reading Club will run from May 26 through July 25. Stop by any WCPL location at any time between those dates to pick up a reading log, or you can sign up and participate using the Beanstack App.

Children and teens log their time spent reading to earn prizes and or drawing entries at every five hours read. Adults log books read to earn drawing entries.

Reading material can come from anywhere: WCPL libraries, home, comic books, and audiobooks. Any time spent reading or listening to someone read counts.

For Wooster City School Students, the Summer Reading Club is taking the place of Club 1000. When you make it to 25-hours of reading, you earn the library’s SRC prizes and you get to choose a book for yourself and a friend when you return to school.
