‘Rock & Roll Revue’
Dinner and a show for $25 is a sweet deal, but it’s even sweeter when Melbourne Municipal Band’s Rock & Roll Revue rocks the house for a good cause.
The eight-piece ensemble, complete with a male vocalist and a Doo-Wop trio, will perform at 7:30 p.m. on May 29, for a dinner show that benefits Martin Andersen Senior Center in Rockledge. Attendees will enjoy a lasagna and salad dinner followed by classic dance tunes courtesy of the revue.
“The audience can expect music from the ’50’, 60’s & 70’s by several of their favorite artists for their dancing and listening pleasure,” said Rock & Roll Revue conductor Art Martin.
Joining the musicians and vocalist Jeremy Lundquist will be the Swingtimers Vocal Trio of Connie Maltby, Diana Sageser and Dave Hutson.
Maltby, who moved to St. Augustine last year, is back in town and thrilled to sing again. She sang with the Brevard Chorale, Space Coast Symphony Orchestra and, of course, the Swingtimers Trio for many years. You can catch her in “The Sound of Music” this summer at the Limelight Theatre in St. Augustine.
Sageser has been singing away with the Swingtimers for a decade.
“I come from a very musical family, one that used to sing harmonies together while we were setting and clearing the table after dinner,” she said.
Sageser has played percussion with both MMB and Melbourne Community Orchestra and also played and sang with the Harbor City Dance Band. The multi-talented Sageser has also performed as a living history interpreter and a professional clown.
“My grandmother was involved in vaudeville, so I guess it’s in my blood,” she said.
Hutson, founder and director of the Swingtimers, has been singing close harmony since high school, when he was part of a folk music group. When he joined MMB’s Swingtime Big Band as a sax player, Hutson formed the Swingtimers to sing swing music of that era. The group has since expanded its repertoire to include songs reminiscent of Manhattan Transfer.
Hutson also sings in the Oh Golly Dixieland Band and the 321 Jazz Orchestra and plays sax for the New Horizons Band. He is the founder and director of the Adagio Sax Quartet.
Rock & Roll Revue conductor Art Martin attended the legendary Juilliard School of Music in New York City. He taught in New Jersey public schools for more than 40 years and served as an adjunct instructor of music at Montclair State University. Martin has been a member of the Swingtime Big Band, Melbourne Municipal Band, The Oh Golly Dixieland Band, and played a variety of woodwind instruments as part of the pit orchestras at the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse and at the Henegar Center. He also performed with the Space Coast Pops and Central Florida Winds. He is currently band leader for Rock & Roll Revue and the Oh Golly Dixieland Band.
Tickets for dinner and the show are available at the Martin Andersen Senior Center, 1025 Florida Ave., Rockledge. For more information, call 321-631-7549.
HALL Winery dinner
Since the time she first started working in her family’s Mendocino vineyards, Kathryn Hall dreamed of a place to showcase fine wines alongside expressive art and masterful architecture. The dream became reality when Kathryn and Craig Hall created HALL Winery, where innovation meets contemporary design.
The Halls acquired the historic St. Helena Bergfeld Winery in 2003 and re-opened as HALL St. Helena in July of that year. With a rich history spanning 150 years, HALL St. Helena’s location was once the home of the Napa Valley Co-Op, producing 40% of Napa Valley’s wines. In 2013, The Hall family completed the restoration of the 1885 Bergfeld Winery and merged history and innovation with the completion of California’s first LEED Gold Certified winery.
HALL’s estate vineyards encompass more than 500 acres of classic Bordeaux varietals; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc. As winegrowers, the Halls have respect for the environment and a commitment to cutting-edge vineyard technology to yield the highest quality grapes. With wines that routinely head well north of the 90-point mark, HALL Wines continue to set new heights in Napa Valley winemaking.
Selections from HALL, plus WALT’s award-winning single-vineyard wines and BACA’s delectable Zinfandels, form the axis for the dinner pairing Café Margaux will deliver at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, June 4 and 5.
The six-course menu begins with spicy red lentil stew with coconut milk and spinach, followed by a salad course of red Salanova lettuce and fennel, carrots, radishes, cucumbers and Gala apple. Espresso-rubbed scallops with braised veal cheeks, black quinoa and a red wine reduction are the featured third course. Mustard-marinated leg of lamb with sauteed Swiss Chard, couscous and stuffed Roma tomato is the fourth course, which precedes a cheese course of red Windsor cheddar from Britan and coconut orange cake for dessert.
Cost is $135 per guest. Reservations are recommended. Call 321-639-8343. For the full menu and wine pairings, visit margaux.com. Café Margaux is at 220 Brevard Ave., Cocoa Village.
