UHRICHSVILLE ‒ Two residents and a firefighter were taken to a local hospital after a fire at a residence at 302 E. High St. on the afternoon of July 27.
One of the residents was transported to Trinity Hospital Twin City in Dennison, the other to Mercy Hospital in Canton. The firefighter, whose non-life-threatening injuries were related to the weather, was taken to Union Hospital in Dover.
According to Uhrichsville Fire Chief Justin Edwards, crews were dispatched at 5:58 p.m. When they arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from all sides of the two-story frame structure. Most of the fire was in the rear, in the kitchen area, where the fire started.
One of the residents was out of the house when first responders arrived. The other resident was assisted from the house by two Uhrichsville police officers, Edwards said.
The house sustained extensive damage, including smoke and water damage throughout, the chief said. But he added that the structure is not a total loss. He did not have a damage estimate.
Uhrichsville was assisted at the scene by firefighters from Dennison, New Philadelphia, Dover, Warwick Township and the Arrowhead Joint Fire District in Gnadenhutten. Also on scene were staff from Smith Ambulance.
Edwards said the high heat and humidity on July 27 had an impact on fighting the fire. “We call more people when it’s hot like this.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
