Roundup: Newark softball, baseball teams open week with wins

Teagan Bowermaster homered and was one of three players to knock in four runs May 4, powering the Newark softball team to a 21-17 victory against visiting Fairfield Union.

Bowermaster recorded three hits, and Savannah Woody and Lexi Shanaberg also drove in four runs apiece, combining for six hits. Mallory Back added two hits, including a double, and five runs and Maygen Woody two hits, a run and two RBIs for the Wildcats (3-17).

Heath blanks Northridge

Natalie Blakely struck out six in a five-inning two-hit shutout, pitching Heath to a 10-0 victory against visiting Northridge in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.

Lexi Purington and Addy Purdy racked up three hits apiece, combining for three doubles, five runs and three RBIs for the Bulldogs (3-14, 2-11). Laityn Dennison added two hits, including a double, and two RBIs and Leighton O’Reilly two hits, a run and an RBI.

Ellie Reese and Ashlynn Mauger each singled for the Vikings (7-14, 2-12).

NC wins at Utica

Joanna Snider threw out the potential tying run at the plate from center field, ending Newark Catholic’s 8-7 victory at Utica in LCL-Cardinal play.

Joanna Bailey, who notched three hits, and Jahni Whitney each homered for the Green Wave (13-7, 7-6), and Veronica Bailey added two hits, two runs and two RBIs and Ela Valenzuela two hits and a run. Veronica Bailey also struck out six and allowed eight hits and four runs in five innings.

Kenzie Fletcher homered as a part of a three-hit day, scoring twice and knocking in three to lead Utica (11-9, 6-7). Kaitlin Evans and Makena Wilson also homered, and Kiersten Hull added two doubles, a run and an RBI.

Watkins wins at Granville

Alli Langwasser was a perfect 4 for 4 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in two, igniting Watkins Memorial in a 12-4 victory at Granville in LCL-Buckeye play.

Marissa Weber and Bryna Davis added two hits, including a double, two runs and an RBI apiece and Gracie Gerhardt and Marlee Gerhardt two hits and a run apiece for the Warriors (15-6, 9-4). Morgan Gerhardt struck out one and allowed four hits and two runs in three innings.

Aubrey Lackey homered twice and drove in three runs to lead the Blue Aces (9-14, 3-10). Carly Wollenberg added three hits and a run and Sydney Cottrill two hits, including a double.

Valley shuts out Heights

Emory Whisner fired a six-inning no-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks, pitching Licking Valley to a 10-0 victory at Licking Heights, securing at least a share of the LCL-Buckeye championship.

Whisner also led the unbeaten Panthers (18-0, 14-0) with three hits, including a double, two runs and an RBI. Tori Baughman added two hits, two runs and two RBIs, Chloe Cooperrider two hits, including a triple, a run and an RBI, Emma Flowers two hits, including a double, and a run and Madison Evans a double and two RBIs.

Jadyn Ribbing reached on an error for the Hornets (12-7, 6-5).

Liberty falls in seventh

Visiting Tree of Life scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning, sending Liberty Christian to a 17-11 defeat in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Macyn Looney led the Eagles (4-11, 3-5) with a double and a single, a run and five RBIs. Kayla Feeney and Katelyn Nestor scored three runs apiece, combining for three hits and two RBIs.

BASEBALL

Newark wins at Central

Trenton Wilson relieved and got the final two outs, securing Newark’s 10-8 victory at Pickerington Central to remain in a first-place tie in the Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division.

Moses Crane hit a solo home run, and he and Bodie Smith scored three runs apiece, and Brody Driskel added three hits, a run and an RBI and Luke Miller two hits, including a double, a run and an RBI for the Wildcats (15-3, 10-1). Brody Randall struck out four and allowed one hit and one earned run in four innings.

Johnstown nips Lakewood

Landon Myers doubled and knocked in all three runs, lifting Johnstown to a 3-2 victory against visiting Lakewood in LCL-Cardinal play.

Myers also struck out five and allowed one earned run in a three-hitter for the Johnnies (8-9, 5-7).  Luke Carter added a hit and a run and Braeden Archibald and Kaden Carpenter a run apiece.

Carter Davis struck out 11 and allowed four hits and three unearned runs in six innings for the Lancers (5-13, 2-10). Davis also doubled and singled and scored a run, and Jaxson Marlo added a hit and an RBI.

Heath beats Northridge

Carter Mason’s two-run single highlighted a five-run bottom of the fourth inning, jumpstarting Heath in an 8-3 victory against visiting Northridge in LCL-Cardinal play.

Camden Stephens and Drew Gostrue added two hits and a run apiece with Gostrue driving in a run and Jamison Walsh a hit and two RBIs for the Bulldogs (10-8, 8-4), who remained in a first-place tie with Newark Catholic. Walsh also struck out four and allowed five hits and two earned runs in five innings, and Macksen Matthews retired the final six batters, striking out one.

Kash Reeves doubled and singled and scored a run for the Vikings (10-6, 7-5), who fell a game back. Noah Mason added a hit and a run and Sam Miller a hit and an RBI.

NC wins at Utica

Owen Przymierski fired a one-hit shutout, striking out nine and walking just one in Newark Catholic’s 4-0 victory at Utica in LCL-Cardinal play.

Kane Stephey had the lone hit and knocked in pair of runs for the Green Wave (12-5, 8-4), who remained in a first-place tie with Heath and host the Bulldogs on May 5. Andy Gossett and Alex Nagel scored a run apiece. 

Braxton Fisher struck out two and allowed just one hit and one earned run for Utica (5-15, 3-9), which committed four errors. Fisher also had the lone Utica hit.

Valley cruises at Heights

Trey McLaughlin homered in Licking Valley’s 13-1 victory at Licking Heights to clinch at least a share of the LCL-Buckeye championship.

Zane Hancock added a double and a single and four RBIs, Brody Rodgers and Evan Lohr two hits and two runs apiece and Brandt Lichtenauer a hit, three runs and an RBI for the Panthers (15-2, 12-1). Grayson Snow struck out four and allowed two hits and an unearned run in four innings.

Maxim Fink singled and scored on a Tino Martin single for the Hornets (5-10, 5-7).

Granville beats Watkins

Keaton Feeley’s two-run single capped a four-run bottom of the fourth inning, turning the tide in Granville’s 9-6 victory against visiting Watkins Memorial in LCL-Buckeye play.

Luke Jakobowski led the Blue Aces (9-8, 8-5) with two hits, including a double, two runs and two RBIs, and Wilson Wells added two hits and three runs, Chase Holtzapple a double and two runs and Jakob Culver a hit, a run and two RBIs. Levi Legg struck out two and allowed three hits and one unearned run in 4⅓ innings of relief.

Cody York hit a three-run home run for the Warriors (11-7, 8-4), and Cam Burt added four hits, a run and an RBI, Dylan Gray two hits and an RBI and Patrick Shroyer a hit and two runs. Cooper Lang struck out two and allowed one unearned run in two hitless innings of relief.

Liberty drops home game

Dawson Kamppi doubled twice and scored a run for Liberty Christian in a 13-3 loss to visiting Tree of Life in MOCAL play.

Drew Fye added a hit and an RBI for the Eagles (4-8, 3-6).

BOYS TENNIS

Newark sweeps

Newark dropped just three games in a 5-0 victory against visiting Franklin Heights.

Linus Lininger, 6-1, 6-0, Viktor Gleckler, 6-1, 6-0, and Wes Arnold, 6-0, 6-0, won singles matches for the Wildcats (9-5). Grayson Boyer and Will Bolte, 6-0, 6-0, and Isaac DeVries and Bradley Pastorius, 6-0, 6-1, won doubles matches.

Watkins wins

The Watkins Memorial doubles teams did not drop a game in a 4-1 victory against Westerville Central.

Gavin Adelman and Nathan Walter, 6-0, 6-0, and Nic Garabrandt and Jeffrey Smith, 6-0, 6-0, won doubles matches for the Warriors (11-4). Graham Smith, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 and Wyatt Meade, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 added singles wins.
