Near the bottom of the menu at Cafe Mediterranean, in Hyde Park, you’ll find one of my favorite dishes. The spinach pide – pronounced pee-DAY – ($22) is a traditional Turkish flatbread, formed into a boat-like shape filled with spinach, sauteed onions and mozzarella. Owner Fahri Ozdil folds those ingredients into his homemade filo dough, tops it with sesame seeds and bakes it to a golden brown.
I used to only order the pide for my vegetarian daughter, who would eat two or three slices, leaving the rest to me. But lately I’ve just been ordering one for myself, taking it home in a pizza box for lunch and devouring it at the kitchen counter. The flaky dough practically melts into the soft cheese and sauteed vegetables. You can also order your pide stuffed with Turkish sausage and cheese.
