The results were evident Bedford senior hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to tie the game, then singled home the winning run in the ninth inning to nip Monroe 7-6 on Monday, May 4.

“It was kind of unexpected,” Bedford coach Craig Trychel said. “He really struggled hitting last year. We worked on his swing and he’s doing really well. He had a real long swing last year. Now, it’s nice and short.”

Coberley, who finished with three hits, has bumped his average to .341 this spring.

Coming into Monday’s game, a double was Coberley’s only extra-base hit was a double. His first home run came at a perfect time.

“He hit it and it just carried,” Trychel said. “At first I didn’t think it was going to be a home run.”

Also carrying a hot bat is teammate Brody Leonhard.

The senior who is hitting over .400 collected three hits, including a double in the seventh that started the winning rally.

Chase Atkins added two hits for the Mules, who improved to 10-5.

“We’ve played good baseball at times, an other times we’ve struggled and made errors,” Trychel said. “Today, we only gave up three hits. … You don’t have many games when you walk 11, hit five batters, make three errors and win.

“It was crazy, but the guys were resilient. The battled. We went down 6-2 and were down three in the top of the seventh.”

Carson Liedel hit a two-run homer for Monroe and Asher Simmons doubled.
