“Holland In Photos,” a series shot by Sentinel photographer Adam Vander Kooy, highlights the extra-ordinary happenings of your neighbors.
HOLLAND — For this week’s Holland in Photos, I decided to go shopping at Mi Favorita Grocery.
What started in the 1990s as a small neighborhood store has grown over the years, expanding alongside the family that owns it. These days, the business serves authentic Mexican food in addition to shopping staples, with workers often stopping in and asking for meals on their lunch breaks.
Jacqueline Navarrete-Ruano, who grew up in the family business, now helps with day-to-day operations. The menu, she said, has been shaped by the people behind the counter, including cooks from different regions of Mexico.
The family recently invested in a food truck, with plans to introduce new locations to Mi Favorita as the business continues to grow. The truck carries many of the same recipes as the storefront.
