Three permits released last month to The Daily Reporter under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act reveal ongoing full remodel and climate-control projects at the million-square-foot facility at 500 Jonesville Road.

The Coldwater Walmart Distribution Center, opened in 2001, has operated for 25 years as one of the county’s largest employers.

“We are updating our Coldwater facility to improve the associate experience and create a workplace where team members can thrive,” said Walmart spokesperson Jennifer Chunn.

“The changes include updates to offices, restrooms, and break rooms to bring them more in line with our newer locations,” Chunn said.

Michigan Workforce Development records show the Coldwater location employs nearly 700 people. All renovations occur within the facility’s existing 1.1 million-square-foot footprint and are not visible from outside.

The largest project, a $24.5 million full remodel, will upgrade 40,000 square feet of office and support space inside the facility.

Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and alarm systems will be upgraded.

A $4 million climate-control remodel will enhance the warehouse’s efficiency and create a more worker-friendly environment.

The permit includes installing new insulation, painting the columns and walls, installing clerestory windows for natural light, replacing exit doors, polishing the floors, and raising the dock door heights.

An $18 million climate-control package will further improve warehouse infrastructure.

This work includes infilling roof fans, removing and infilling building louvers, and adding inspection windows between dock doors, all within the current building footprint.

Novak Construction Company of Chicago is the project contractor.

All renovations are scheduled for completion this year.

The property, valued at $10.8 million, receives city utilities under a PA 425 agreement between Coldwater and Girard Township.

Walmart operates approximately 108 distribution and warehouse facilities across the United States.

The Coldwater renovation is nearly twice the amount of other distribution center upgrades announced for 2026.
