Gas prices jump across NY. Here’s what you’ll pay now

Gas prices surged across New York and the nation this week, with averages rising sharply as oil prices climb and supply tightens, according to AAA.

Prices climb statewide and nationally

The national average for a gallon of gasoline is $4.46, up 35 cents from last week and well above $3.17 a year ago.

New York’s average is also $4.46, up 27 cents from last week, compared with $3.10 a year ago.

The AAA Western and Central New York reported similar increases across upstate cities:

Oil prices and global tensions drive spike

AAA said rising oil prices tied to continued tensions in the Middle East are pushing fuel costs higher. Oil is trading between $103 and $109 per barrel, up from $97 to $108 a week earlier.

Crude oil is the primary ingredient in gasoline, meaning changes in oil prices quickly affect pump prices.

Supply and demand pressures

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, gasoline demand is up while domestic supply and production have fallen, adding further pressure to prices.

Diesel and EV costs also rise

Diesel prices are also increasing. The national average is $5.64, up 19 cents from last week and well above $3.55 a year ago. New York’s diesel average is $5.94.

Electric vehicle charging costs are also slightly higher, with the national average at 42 cents per kilowatt hour and New York at 41 cents.

Consumer trends and fuel-saving tips

A new AAA survey shows growing interest in hybrid vehicles, with 35% of U.S. adults saying they are likely to choose a hybrid for their next purchase. Drivers cited reduced range anxiety and easier refueling as key factors.

AAA recommends drivers save fuel by combining trips, avoiding rush hour, maintaining proper tire pressure and using cruise control when possible. The AAA Mobile App can help compare gas prices before filling up.
