Newark firefighters responded around 6 p.m. Sept. 2 to a fire at 271 Buckingham Street, according to a social media post from the department. They found a garage on fire and helped evacuate two people from the building, Fire Chief Brandon Metzger said.

The residents suffered burns, and authorities took them to Licking Memorial Hospital, where staff treated and later released them.

A Newark firefighter suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was also treated and released, Metzger said. They are expected to recover and return to the department, he said.

“Due to the incendiary nature of the fire itself, it had a pretty good head start on us,” Metzger said. “Our firefighters did an outstanding job, as they always do, of getting on scene and immediately searching for saveable life and starting to attack the fire and mitigate it (from spreading) to other areas and structures.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but as of Sept. 4, the department believed the fire started following an unintentional but human act, Metzger said.

Multiple other fire departments responded to the scene, including from Heath, Granville, Madison, Newton and Mary Ann townships.
