CANTON ‒ A 13-year-old sitting on his front porch was shot in the arm as a gun battle played out in nearby street.
The shooting took place in the 2100 block of Fourth Street NE on the afternoon of May 21.
A police report says the boy’s injury occurred as the result of others shooting in the roadway. Reports indicated people were firing at each other from two cars.
A woman who called police said “someone shot my baby,” according to the report. Police found the boy lying on the front porch of his home.
The mother told police that the shooting occurred while they were on the porch, and the shots had come from the east.
An officer put a tourniquet on the teen’s shoulder before Canton Fire Department medics arrived to take over his care and transport him to Aultman Hospital. His condition was unknown the morning of May 22.
Based on witness statements and video, police believe a red or maroon Chevrolet Impala and a white Kia K5 were involved. The Kia had dark rims and tinted windows.
A resident told police the people in the cars were chasing each other and shooting.
The case remains under investigation. Police did not have any suspects on the morning of May 22. No motive was identified in police documents.
Two shell casings were found in the middle of the road near Fourth Street and Rice Avenue NE. A bullet fragment was found on the front porch of a house in the 2200 block of Fourth Street.
Another set of casings, that appeared to be a different caliber, were found in the roadway in the 300 block of Rice Avenue.
The incident was reported at 4:44 p.m.
