Iowa woman dies after fall at Hocking Hills hiking trail

A woman from Iowa died May 20 after falling from a cliff while hiking in Hocking Hills State Park, Dispatch news partner NBC4/WCMH-TV reported.

The Hocking County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as Nancy Baker, 63, of Davenport, Iowa.

According to NBC4, preliminary findings from the coroner’s office indicate Baker was hiking with her husband along the Cantwell Cliffs trail, a semi-remote, one-way hiking loop off of State Route 374 in southeast Ohio.

Authorities said Baker was descending a steep section of the trail at 2:48 p.m. when she reportedly tripped, slid down an embankment and fell about 80 feet over a cliff.

Natural Resources officers responded to the scene, where Baker died, NBC4 reported.

The coroner’s office said a full autopsy could take up to two months. Baker’s body was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for further examination.
