The NCAA announced its punishment for Michigan’s sign-stealing scheme from 2021-23 on Aug. 15, slapping its football program with fines, a coach’s suspension, multiple show-cause orders and more.
Missing from the punishments were a postseason ban or a vacating of the Wolverines’ 2023 national championship win that some Buckeyes fans were rooting for on social media. As such, Buckeyes fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to voice their disdain for the NCAA’s punishments, often saying they didn’t go far enough.
At the top of mind for some fans is OSU’s own brush with NCAA sanctions in 2011, when the team was heavily punished with vacated wins, a postseason ban, scholarship reductions, NCAA probation and a show-cause order for coach Jim Tressel. An NCAA investigation found OSU players traded valuable items for tattoos and that Tressel did not tell the NCAA about it.
