An alleged gang member accused of killing a Mansfield man could spend life in prison with no chance of parole.
Elijah Taylor, 21, of Mansfield, had accomplices with him during the shooting, according to Richland County Prosecutor Jodie Schumacher.
Taylor faces 16 counts, including aggravated murder and participating in a criminal gang, in connection with the shooting death of Ja’Myrion Hobbs, 18, on Aug. 17, 2025, in the 200 block of South Main Street.
Prosecutors believe Taylor was accompanied by Yaounde Hawthorne, 24, as well as a juvenile.
The 16-year-old Mansfield boy, whom the News Journal is not naming, admitted involvement in the fatal shooting.
Hawthorne and Taylor, whose charges mirror one another’s, could have their cases tried together.
“We did file joinder motions,” Schumacher said. “Those were argued last week.”
In legal terms, joinder is the process of combining multiple claims or parties into a single lawsuit. It is used to streamline court proceedings, prevent repetitive trials and ensure that all related legal issues are efficiently resolved at the same time.
“We’re waiting on a ruling from the court,” Schumacher said.
Taylor’s trial is scheduled for July 8 in the courtroom of Richland County Common Pleas Judge Brent Robinson.
