Former Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy was fired by Celtic FC on Jan. 5, just 33 days after he left Columbus for the job in Scotland.
While the statement released by Celtic provided no information on why the decision was made, Nancy has been in the hot seat for multiple weeks.
Nancy’s first game with Celtic was a 2-1 loss to the Scottish Premiership’s top-ranked Heart FC on Dec. 7. Things continued going poorly for Nancy, as he became the first Celtic coach to start his tenure 0-4.
It took until Dec. 21 for Nancy to record his first win, defeating Aberdeen FC 3-1 with Aberdeen down a player in the second half due to a red-card violation.
Nancy finished his tenure with Celtic losing 3-1 to rival Rangers FC, putting his record at 2-6.
Along with Nancy, the three assistant coaches he brought from Columbus to Celtic, Kwame Ampadu, Maxime Chalier and Jules Gueguen, were also let go.
Nancy’s departure from the Crew came at the end of his third season with the club.
Nancy led the Crew to the 2023 MLS Cup title, 2024 Leagues Cup title and the club’s first CONCACAF Champions Cup final.
Before the end of the 2025 season, Nancy declined the Crew’s offer for a contract extension that would have made him the highest-paid MLS coach, according to a source.
The Crew announced Nancy’s replacement, Swedish coach Henrik Rydstrom, on Dec. 31.
