As the snow falls, Woody Hayes stands in his short-sleeved collared shirt, tie and baseball hat.
The 1967 photo of the former Ohio State University football coach, during the game against the University of Michigan, has become one of the most recognizable photos of Hayes.
The man on the other side of the camera lens, Dispatch photographer Charlie Hays, took thousands of photos during his more than 40-year career at the newspaper.
Hays, 83, died on Sept. 28. He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, two daughters and four grandchildren, according to his obituary.
Hays took an interest in photography from a young age that eventually led him to an internship at The Dispatch after graduating from high school in 1962.
Along with his famous photo of Ohio State’s coach, Hays also photographed governors, presidents, famous actors and breaking news. He retired from The Dispatch in 2005 after more than 42 years.
