Cincinnati Reds designate Rece Hinds for assignment; Jose Trevino to IL

CLEVELAND — The Cincinnati Reds didn’t wait for the MRI to put catcher Jose Trevino on the 10-day injured list because of the hamstring injury he suffered running out a sacrifice bunt on Saturday, May 16 in Cleveland.

It kept their big-league catching corps intact until they determine how serious the injury is, but the domino effect on the roster cost promising young outfielder Rece Hinds his job in the organization.

Hinds, who earned National League player of the week honors during his debut week in 2024, was designated for assignment to create room on the 40-man roster for the Reds to promote catcher P.J. Higgins from Triple-A Louisivlle.

Because of his speed-power skill set, Hinds, 25, is almost certain to be claimed off waivers by another organization.

Hinds, a second-round draft pick in 2019, was just 9-for-80 (.118) with 39 strikeouts, two walks and two home runs in 27 big-league games since his 24-game debut in 2024. That included 4-for-33 with 18 Ks and 1 walk in 12 games this season.

“Maybe for his sake, I really hope he gets an opportunity that maybe he didn’t get here,” manager Terry Francona said. “We love the kid. There’s obviously tools there. Sometimes things have a way of working out for guys.”

Trevino was to leave Cleveland for Cincinnati Sunday to have an MRI, at which point the club expects to map out a rehab plan and potential timeline.

Higgins required a 40-man move because he had been DFA’d and eventually outrighted back to Louisville early in the week when the Reds needed roster room for recently signed free agent pitcher Chris Paddack (who pitched five innings Saturday in Cleveland).

Also Sunday, the Reds optioned young reliever Luis Mey back to Louisville and recalled right-hander Jose Franco.
