Weather looking good for Boilermaker Sunday

It’s looking to be a perfect day for the 49th running of Utica’s Boilermaker Road Race, with the Binghamton National Weather Service predicting a cool morning from racers.

The annual event reached its entry caps at the end of June with 4,500 runners signed up for the 5K run through the city presented by Utica National and 11,000 for the featured 15K.

Binghamton National Weather Service Meteorologist Adam Gill said the average temperature for the Road Race weekend to be in the mid to upper 80s.

“It looks like it will be mostly sunny through the day, with cloud cover only being about five to ten percent,” Gill explained, adding that Sunday is looking dry with winds of about three miles per hour.

Currently, Gill said there looked to be no signs of precipitation on race day. “The humidity will be on the lower end, but definitely drink water and wear sunscreen.”

The early morning is expected to start in the 60s at 8 a.m. and rise to the upper 80s by 4 p.m.

“Expect temperatures to be in the upper 60s and low 70s before noon,” Gill said. Come evening, the meteorologist said it will cool right back down to the mid-70s by 8 p.m.

Gill explained that a cold front coming through Thursday night into Friday will dry things out for the weekend and the area isn’t expecting to be hit by another front to Monday or Monday night.

“It’s tough to plot out the whole 24 hours [of the Boilermaker’s race day] but I think it’s going to be fairly nice,” Gill said.
