A Scarsdale community leader and staunch advocate for the disabled was found dead in her Fox Meadow home on Tuesday.
Police have not said what led them to the Butler Road home of Marian Green in the middle of the night early on Tuesday, July 7, when they found her body. The winding street between Brewster and Hampton roads was closed by yellow tape until after 9 p.m. Tuesday as village detectives and forensic investigators from Westchester County police collected evidence.
Green, 71, was a widow who lived in the home with her 26-year-old son.
Detective Lt. Dinis Castro said Tuesday afternoon that police were awaiting the results of an autopsy by the Westchester Medical Examiner’s Office. He could not be reached Wednesday morning.
Green was a longtime member of the village’s Advisory Council for People with Disabilities, serving as its chair for the past several years. She was also a former chair of C.H.I.L.D., Children Having Individual Learning Differences, a committee of the Parent Teacher Council of Scarsdale schools that advocates for special needs children and their families.
She was a regular participant in discussions about accessibility around the village, from sidewalk construction to the new municipal pool complex, according to reporting at Scarsdale10583.com.
Many who knew Green feared the worst when they heard about the investigation but had no solid information from police through the day.
Ronny Hersch, who served on the advisory council with Green over the past decade, said she was a good friend whose volunteerism in Scarsdale made a difference.
They first met when Green helped run the school store at Scarsdale Middle School while her son was a student there.
Hersch said Green had a background in landscape design and was a driving force in getting the Board of Trustees last year to commit funds to repairing crumbling sidewalks.
“She was just a good person, kind hearted,” Hersch said. “She really tried to help the community.”
