Hang up those hoodies, Mohawk Valley, because here comes the sun!

“No watches, warnings, or advisories” in the forecast as mercury is rising this weekend, climbing from highs in the mid 40s to low 50s to high 70s, where greater Utica may see 80° on Saturday.

“We are definitely looking at a warm-up here,” said National Weather Service Binghamton Meteorologist Mitchell Gaines. “In terms of the weekend, we’re looking at a welcome change from the past two weeks, with temperatures in the mid to high 70s.”

After feeling the Friday gloom, with cloudy skies, chilly temps mostly mid-to-high 40s, with a cool wind and cold rain dropping, the weekend in the Mohawk Valley – with the exception of a 40% chance of evening showers on Saturday close to or after sunset – brings a glimpse of summer, with mostly clear, sunny skies and temps in the mid-to-high 70s.

Gaines said the highest the mercury is expected to climb will be on Monday and Tuesday of next week, when Central New York will feel it warm up to upper 80s.

A slight cool down through Thursday of next week

Things will cool down slightly Wednesday and Thursday, with Thursday highs hovering around the mid-60s, but clear dry skies will stick around.

Gaines confirmed the Central New York region forecasts for the weekend and week ahead – including Madison and Herkimer counties – are very similar, with “slightly warmer or cooler” weather in some locales around the Mohawk Valley “largely based on elevation.”

What weather is in store for Mohawk Valley Memorial Day weekend?

Gaines clarified that the NWS Mohawk Valley field offices only venture to forecast in detail one week out. But he did give a hint.

“The Climate Prediction Center is indicating higher chances of above normal temperatures for Memorial weekend,” shared Gaines, before concluding with the caveat, “but higher chances for precipitation, as well.

Gaines advised to check back over the weekend or early next week for a more current, detailed holiday weekend forecast.
