This spring, SewGreen will celebrate its 10-year anniversary and a new location on West Main Street.
SewGreen is a nonprofit fiber arts thrift store and community space on West Main Street in Rochester. It focuses on sustainability, accessibility and fiber arts education, teaching people of all ages sewing, crocheting, knitting, embroidery, mending and tailoring.
The nonprofit is almost entirely funded by donations. “We take donations of fabric, sewing machines, yarn, knitting needles, crochet hooks – all different kinds of sewing accessories,” said Ansel Eklund, SewGreen’s previous donations and merchandising manager. “Our goal is to keep as much as we can out of the landfill – give things a second life.”
Since its opening, SewGreen has become a cornerstone of Rochester’s sustainability efforts and economy as it transforms donated textiles into affordable resources and teaches essential skills.
The celebration will feature a ribbon cutting – signifying the official reopening of SewGreen, live demonstrations by Sew of different fiber arts and shop tours – to see how SewGreen takes high-quality fabric, yarn and sewing equipment out of the waste stream.
