THIELLS ― North Rockland eighth grader Jiana Diaz was ready for her moment.
The designated hitter came up in the bottom of the ninth inning with a runner on second and one out with a chance to walk off Friday’s game against Pearl River at North Rockland Stadium.
She took the fourth pitch of the at-bat from Pearl River’s Ashlyn Ryan up the middle for a single, scoring Reese Calvario to give the Pirates a 4-3 win in the second game of the two-day Rockland Challenge.
“I was very nervous in that situation,” Diaz said. “I know that Pearl River is a very fast team. They have a really good pitcher Ashlyn (Ryan). I was just looking for my own pitch to drive. It was a lot of emotions but I like being in those kind of situations.”
Her first year on varsity has been a memorable one.
“She’s strong, she’s powerful, she’s big,” Red Raiders coach Jackie DiNuzzo said. “She’s come though a bunch of times this season. It’s pretty damn amazing for an eighth grader, especially at AAA. She’s time and time again pulled through for us.”
Diaz has had some good mentors growing up learning about having the mentality to come up to the plate and be clutch for her team.
“I grew up with three brothers who play baseball,” Diaz said. “I have a brother who played in college. I’ve always grew up with those moments.”
And this capped off a 4-0 stretch as North Rockland heads to the postseason, including a pair of wins against Class AAA foe R.C. Ketcham and reigning Section 1 AAA champion White Plains.
“I’m feeling really good,” North Rockland ace Tara Murphy said. “I know we have to keep practicing and keep getting ready for the playoffs. It’s hard to beat a team twice. I know we have to get ready. We’re going to see the same teams so we have to learn from our mistakes and keep going.”
With the game tied at one in the bottom of the fifth inning, Murphy launched a home run over the left field fence to give the Red Raiders the 2-1 lead.
The Pirates had the lead after the top of the sixth inning. Bella Caparrelli and Angelina Franzese both scored on a throwing error to give the Pirates the 3-2 lead.
“I think this was a great Rockland County battle between two good teams,” Pearl River coach Chris Woolgar said. ” I think, for us, you want to win but I think we’re going to use this to build on for the next three weeks and hopefully more.”
In the bottom of the sixth, Red Raiders center fielder Aubrey Perini grounded out and drove in Melody Nardone to tie the game setting the stage for extra innings.
Player of the game
Tara Murphy, North Rockland: When you look at the way the game played out, yes Jiana Diaz was the heroine of the moment but if wasn’t for Murphy, the Red Raiders might have lost the game. She was resilient in the circle (ER, 4 H; 2 BB, 10 K), came up huge with her bat. She had countless moments of great defensive including an inning ending double play in the top of the sixth inning when the Red Raiders were down by a run.
