Corning: Sydney Kiczenski 17-yard TD run to bring Hawks within 7-6. Try for 2 no good.

Express improved to 3-8 after losing its first seven games. Elmira will play top-seeded Union-Endicott in the championship game at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 23 at Susquehanna Valley. U-E was a 40-0 winner over Ithaca in their semifinal.

“Defensively they played fantastic,” Elmira coach A’Don Allen said of his team. “Kayvonna King, Mady Wasicki, Hayden Baker, Lacy Pronti. I could keep going. Ella (Devlin), Ava Preston, that whole defense kept us in the game the first half.

“The kids really dug down deep. They really wanted this one today. The start of the season was ridiculous. We had 44 kids in the program. Of the 44, I think 38 were new. We started off in that way, but I said, ‘Listen, it’s all about one game right now. No wins, no losses. Let’s go out and let’s do this.’ … The energy from the team was just fantastic today.”

Allen also praised freshman quarterback Marley Devlin, who hit Wheeler for a long pass to set up Elmira’s first touchdown. Devlin rolled her ankle in the second half but returned after getting it taped.

“Her and Ella really gave us a big boost today,” Allen said. “And Ella is Ella. She’s returning all-state player and she’s had to sacrifice some this year because the team is so young.”

Allen added it’s a lot to ask of Marley Devlin, who hadn’t played quarterback before this season and has thrown for nearly 1,200 yards.

Said Elmira coach A’Don Allen: “This is not the result we were hoping for to close out the regular season. Credit to Johnson City — they played with a high level of intensity throughout the game. We were slow to match that energy. We now turn our focus to sectional play, where we will use this experience as an opportunity to improve and prepare for the week ahead.”

Four of them — Mady Wasicki, Laci Pronti, Jayelle Tomisman, and Bella Hill — have been here since the beginning of the program. Faith Bound and Jaydalyn Perez round out the group, and all six have given their heart and soul to this team.

“These girls have been working incredibly hard since day one. We came into this season with a lot of youth and inexperience, and with this being my first year leading the program, I’m really proud of how they’ve stayed the course. “We’re going through some real growing pains right now, but that’s part of building something. You don’t skip steps in this process. We’re going to stay consistent, keep coaching, and keep demanding more. This group is learning what it takes, and those lessons matter.
