Mamaroneck surges ahead, hangs on for a 10-9 win over Rye

RYE – The first half was a blur.

There are some lingering issues to resolve in the final week of the regular season, but for two quarters Mamaroneck demonstrated that a full dose of this offense has the potential to be lethal.

It was perhaps the best half of lacrosse played in Section 1 this season.

The Tigers were in clinic mode Saturday, playing with the kind of speed and precision only a few teams in the state are capable of matching, and built an early five-goal lead against Rye in a Sound Shore rivalry game.

Of course, there will again be some mention of consistency over the full 48 minutes, as Mamaroneck gave back a few goals before celebrating a 10-9 win.

“We talked about this game all week,” Tigers midfielder Jared Rabina said. “This has become a huge rivalry for us. For the 2026s, we played club with these guys for the last four years. They beat us on our home field last year, we beat them here the year before. We call it our biggest rivalry.”

That’s likely to inspire some chatter in Scarsdale, but it has became a showdown.

Mamaroneck is the clear favorite to win another Section 1 Class A title. Rye is the clear favorite heading into the Section 1 Class C tournament.

Both have legitimate state title aspirations.

Of course, that requires sending home a Long Island power in the semifinals. It’s been a stumbling block for both programs over the years. Both teams had fast-and-furious stretches on Saturday. Now it’s a matter of sustaining that next-level effort and execution over four quarters.

This one got tense after the Garnets scored three goals in the final 71 seconds.

“I think if we play those first two quarters every single time, we’re gonna be fine,” Tigers FOGO Ethan Gross said. “We have to get back to practice, get back to work because we can’t fall off and let other teams get back in the game. You saw it happen against Manhasset, too. We have three more games left so we’ll keep getting after it in practice and keep getting better.”

Box score

Mamaroneck (10-3): Carsen Winters 2G, 1A; Brian Auker 2G; Jake Reese 1G, 1A; Owen Reese 1G; Jared Rabina 2G; Nate Kulish 2G, 1A; Sam Mehles 2A; Ethan Gross 17/21FO; Ben Bacalloa 16S.

Rye (9-5): Henry Shoemaker 2G, 1A; Will Niejadlik 3G, 1A; Carson Miller 2G, 1A; Henry Gilroy 1G, 2A; Sam Scully 1G; Jack Levine 1A; Sam LaMonte 10S.

Takeaways

The continued development of Gross has to give Mamaroneck increased confidence heading into the postseason. He was dominant on faceoffs, which is the best and quickest way to wear down a defense.

Even though Rye had already played a few championship-level teams this season, it seemed the Garnets needed 10 minutes before they adjusted to the speed of the game. They eventually got in stride, which is a good sign with two games left ahead of sectionals.

Pleasantville gets a taste of revenge with upset win over Bronxville

PLEASANTVILLE – How do you spell comeuppance?

After battling the likes of Mamaroneck, Rye and Iona Prep during a recent difficult stretch, Bronxville had to believe on some level this was going to be a less taxing matchup.

It was for about 11 minutes.

And then Pleasantville began to play smarter and harder, erased an early deficit and pulled off an 11-9 upset. The feel-good win on Wednesday doesn’t make up for an overtime loss to the Broncos in last year’s Section 1 Class D championship, but it’s a good start.

The Panthers committed four turnovers in the opening minutes and were down 5-1 when the second quarter began.

“We were so motivated for this game and then everyone went out there and got sloppy,” Pleasantville attackman Braden Feeney said. “We got in the huddle and talked and remembered what they did to us last year. They took a sectional championship away from us so that kind of fueled a fire inside of us and we started to play better. This was our game.”

Bronxville managed just four goals the rest of the way.

“We came back with a lot more juice,” Panthers attackman Matteo Pettricione said. “It was our defense that made the difference. We were down four, but then shut them off. … I don’t know how many saves Declan Curry had, but he kept us in the game, for sure. Even when we were down, he was able to hold it together.”

The Broncos were up 7-4 early in the second half.

Pettricione set up Colin McDonough, then made it a one-possession game. George Kennedy converted a turnover and knotted the score, then connected with McDonough to make it an 8-7 lead.

Pleasantville got two more and was up three heading into the fourth quarter. Bronxville got a quick goal to start the fourth but made too many unforced errors to spark a rally.

A title game rematch seems like a good idea right now.

“They have some guys injured so they might be a little better if we do face them again,” Feeney said. “If we do get to the final, I think it’ll be a great matchup again because we have a lot of young guys who have stepped up to fill the roles of the guys we lost from last year.”

Box score

Bronxville (8-5): Chase Bacigalupo 2G; Trevor Valente 1G; Nick Martinelli 2G, 1A; Charlie Atkeson 3A; Thomas Freeman 1G, 2A; Patrick Plunkett 2G; Desi Heathwood 1G, 1A; Landon Hamerling 11S.

Pleasantville (8-5): Colin McDonough 4G; Matteo Pettricione 1G, 3A; Braden Feeney 4G; George Kennedy 2G, 3A; Declan Curry 2A, 15S; David Hundzynski 15/23FO.

Takeaways

Pleasantville was a much different team over the last three quarters and that should concern the defending Class D champions. Instead of instilling doubt, Bronxville sent a young team home with a reason to believe.

Curry might’ve played the game of his life. Somebody needs to pay for his dinner.
