After a relatively tame start to summer, Binghamton residents will see some extremely hot temperatures leading up to July 4.
The National Weather Service in Binghamton issued a heat advisory for the afternoon of June 30 as well as an extreme heat watch for July 1-3.
NWS Binghamton meteorologist Kaitlyn Lardeo said temperatures throughout Broome and surrounding counties will reach the mid-to-upper 90s, with the heat index exceeding 100 degrees.
Here’s some insight into the weather for the holiday week in Binghamton, according to the National Weather Service.
Extreme heat watch issued for Broome, surrounding counties
The heat advisory will be in effect from noon to 8 p.m. June 30 and impacts Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland and surrounding counties, with heat index values up to 97 degrees.
The extreme heat watch will be in effect from 11 a.m. on July 1 to 8 p.m. on July 3, as “dangerously hot conditions” are expected during this time, with heat index values up to 105 degrees.
The hottest temperatures are expected in urban valley locations during the mid-to-late afternoon hours.
NWS Binghamton advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned environments and out of the sun, and to not leave young children or pets in unattended vehicles, as the inside of a car will reach “lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.”
Weather June 30 to July 3 in Binghamton
June 30
The afternoon of June 30 shows a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms between noon and 3 p.m. and a high near 90 degrees, with heat index values as high as 95 degrees.
There is a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the evening, with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 72 degrees.
July 1
July 1 shows a 30% chance of precipitation, with a slight chance of showers before 7 a.m. and then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. The afternoon further shows partly sunny skies and a high near 95 degrees.
The 30% chance continues through the evening, with showers and thunderstorms in the forecast before 8 p.m. and a low around 73 degrees.
July 2
So far, there is no precipitation expected on July 2, though Lardeo said the forecast could change “day by day.”
The afternoon shows sunny skies and a high near 96 degrees, while the evening is expected to be mostly clear with a low around 74 degrees.
July 3
July 3 currently shows the highest chance of precipitation, with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Furthermore, the afternoon is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 93 degrees.
The evening shows a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 p.m., with partly cloudy skies and a low around 71 degrees.
