Kevin Huerter to sign three-year, $27M deal to return to Pistons

Detroit — Ahead of free agency, the Detroit Pistons plan to re-sign sharpshooter Kevin Huerter, according to a source from The Detroit News. The contract is expected to be three years long and worth $27 million.

With Huerter re-signing before the start of free agency, it seems the Pistons have continued to prioritize shooting over other attributes this summer. On Friday, the Pistons traded two future second-round picks for Isaiah Joe from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Huerter originally came to the Pistons in a three-team trade from the Chicago Bulls on Feb. 3, which also involved the Minnesota Timberwolves. In the deal, the Pistons obtained the No. 21 pick in this year’s NBA Draft, which was flipped for the No. 17 selection to acquire Ebuka Okorie in the first round.

The Pistons acquired Huerter to improve their subpar 3-point shooting during the second half of the 2025-26 season. Huerter, who was selected as the No. 19 overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2018 NBA Draft, has built a reputation as one of the league’s most reliable shooters, boasting a career 3-point shooting percentage of 37.1%.

Huerter’s best season came during the 2022-23 campaign with the Sacramento Kings, when he finished 16th in the league in made 3-pointers with 205 triples on 40.2% shooting, placing seventh.

Huerter played in 25 games for the Pistons after the trade, averaging 8.6 points per game on 44.3% shooting from the field. During his first month in Detroit, he struggled to find a consistent role within coach J.B. Bickerstaff’s rotation.

However, due to multiple injuries in the second half of the season, Huerter regained his rhythm over the final 11 games, shooting 38.2% from three-point range and averaging 11.5 points per game.

Due to an ongoing left adductor strain, Huerter spent much of his time on the bench during the Pistons’ playoff run, appearing in only five of a possible 14 games.

Huerter is the first free agent the Pistons intend to re-sign. They now have to make a decision on Jalen Duren, Tobias Harris and Javonte Green.

Earlier in the day, a source confirmed to The Detroit News that the Pistons have picked up the team options on Daniss Jenkins and Tolu Smith.
