Every New York Jets general manager gets their honeymoon phase. Some last longer than others, but at some point, optimism takes over. At this point, we can write the script ourselves.
Fans convince themselves that the right person has finally arrived. Joe Douglas had that moment. Mike Maccagnan had his version of the same hero’s welcome. In New York, early goodwill comes more easily than one might expect. Keeping it, however, is the hard part.
Still, Darren Mougey feels different right now, not simply because of splashy roster moves or favorable headlines, but because his approach appears fundamentally different from the men who came before him. He isn’t borrowing from Joe Douglas’ blueprint. He certainly isn’t recycling Mike Maccagnan’s. He’s building his own. A recent nugget shared by ESPN’s Rich Cimini helped illustrate exactly why Jets fans are buying in.
Darren Mugey has shown the desire to prioritize something that Douglas and Maccagnan didn’t
During his tenure as general manager, Mougey has already extended Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall, Jeremy Ruckert, and Jamien Sherwood, signaling a clear organizational philosophy. Identify young talent early, reward cornerstone players, and avoid letting foundational pieces drift toward uncertainty.
That stands in stark contrast to previous regimes. Joe Douglas extended just two players during his tenure with the Jets: Michael Carter II and Quinnen Williams. Mike Maccagnan extended three: Quincy Enunwa, Brian Winters, and Muhammad Wilkerson. That means Mougey has already outpaced both predecessors individually in a fraction of the time. Listen to the full take from Cimini.
The NFL’s most stable franchises don’t constantly allow their best young players to become drawn-out contract dramas. They move decisively. They reward core contributors before the market explodes. They create continuity. That appears to be Mougey’s mindset. Not every extension will age perfectly. That’s the nature of football’s business side.
Still, fans can at least appreciate the strategy. For far too long, the Jets felt reactive instead of proactive. Too often, roster-building felt disconnected, short-sighted, or dependent on chasing fixes rather than securing foundational pieces already in the building. Mougey’s early approach suggests a front office operating with far more clarity.
Add in some well-received roster moves, a willingness to be aggressive, and a general sense that the organization finally has a coherent plan, and yes, his approval rating with the fan base is climbing fast. Of course, Jets fans have been here before. The real test comes when wins and losses begin stacking up, but for now, Darren Mougey is doing something his predecessors rarely managed for long. He’s giving Jets fans a reason to believe the organization may finally be learning from its past instead of repeating it.
