Jon Stewart joined Stephen Colbert on Tuesday for the third-to-last episode of “The Late Show,” which was canceled by CBS in July.
The “Daily Show” host said that he was there to “celebrate my friend,” along with applauding Colbert for how he has handled the cancellation, saying that he has maintained “such grace through this process.”
Though his visit was mostly light-hearted and focused on uplifting Colbert and his show, Stewart did not shy away from mocking CBS and its decision to end “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
“I just think it’s so smart what CBS is doing,” Stewart said sarcastically. “I just think it’s such a good move, to take this show off the air, and then to also ruin your evening news, and then reduce ’60 Minutes’ to, like, six good ones. Here’s what I believe they’re doing: I think they’re tanking for a draft pick.”
Here is everything you need to know about the iconic New York City-based late-night show that is nearing its final episode.
Jon Stewart on Colbert’s “Late Show”
Stewart, a longtime friend and collaborator of Colbert’s, made a guest appearance on the May 19 episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
The two spoke of their experiences being fired, Stewart joking that “it’s the best,” referencing when “The Jon Stewart Show” was canceled in 1995.
Stewart passed along “profound” advice he received from David Letterman after his show was canceled: “Don’t confuse cancellation with failure,” though Stewart joked the former “Late Show” host also told him that “in this case, it is also a failure.”
He praised Colbert as a “tremendous human, and one of my favorite people,” before presenting Colbert with a gift: a pair of luxurious reclining chairs, to show him “the life you can lead, and the life that I am leading, now that I am not really in show business.”
Colbert worked with Stewart as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” which led him to get his own spinoff, “The Colbert Report,” in 2005. Stewart was also a co-creator of “The Colbert Report,” which used to air after “The Daily Show” until Colbert moved to “The Late Show” in 2015.
Throughout the years, Stewart has made many appearances on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and is a producer on the show.
