Somers is prepping for the playoffs with eyes on the future

SOMERS – All that hardware belongs to last year’s team.

Of course, opponents will be coming at Somers in the weeks ahead like the Tuskers have the very thing every team in Section 1 wants.

Defending a title only gets harder when the playoffs begin.

There are only two games left in the regular season. Is that enough time for Somers to complete a revamp that began after the sectional and state championship trophies were put behind glass nearly a year ago?

A couple of positive results might be a help.

“I think we’re getting there,” senior defender Bret Kennedy said. “Ultimately, all the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year are still there for us so I think it’s about getting better each day and hopefully, we’re playing our best lacrosse and playing for a section championship at the end of the year.”

A visit from New Canaan turned out to be well-timed.

The Tuskers were in stride early and went back and forth with the No. 1 team in Connecticut for most of the first half. Somers lost traction late in the opening half, gave up a run and spent the rest of the game playing catch-up. The Rams headed back across the border with a 15-8 win.

“It was an opportunity to play a really, really good team at the end of the season,” Tuskers coach Jordan Hirsch said. “Coach (Chris) Spillane does a great job of kind of manufacturing the schedule to make it purposeful. The big thing is the game speed, but also their stickwork is elite. For us to have to play at that pace and show that we could go toe-to-toe for at least part of the game, I think is encouraging. Now we just have to find a little consistency.”

Box score

New Canaan (11-2): Wyatt Rotchford 1A; Grey Wildman 6G, 3A; Matt Reed 4G, 2A; Cole Campisi 2G, 1A; Brady Mazabras 2G; Liam Cox 1A; Nick Lerami 1A; Jack Crowil 16S.

Somers (8-6): Cam Violante 3G, 1A; Kieran Picco 1G, 1A; Tristan Iglesias 3G, 1A; Dylan Jimenez 1G; Kealin Wiggins 1A; George Sullivan 1A; Harry Brelesky 1A; Liam Barrett 1A;Bret Kennedy 6CTO, 12GB; Hudson Ruby 14S.

Takeaways

Winning faceoffs against established teams has been a major issue all season. Kennedy typically handles that chore, hoping to force opponents to at least back up, and while he’s getting some wins it exacts a physical toll on the Tuskers’ best pole.

A little more offensive diversity would give Violante and Tristan Iglesias even more room to operate.

“We’ve got to get some of the newcomers up and running,” Violante said. “There’s a lot to clean up on the offensive side, with the younger guys. It’s just a matter of getting them to the right spots so we can produce in the end.”

After watching the footwork and stickwork of Grey Wildman, it’s hard to believe there are more and two or three sophomores in the country better than the Rams attackman.

Plunkett and Haggerty lead Iona Prep to NYCHSAA championship

NEW ROCHELLE – There was a whirlwind of emotions to sort through.

Iona Prep was happy to have another NYSCHSAA championship plaque in hand and elated that Stepinac wasn’t leaving the field with any hardware. There was a touch of melancholy, too, as the seniors walked off Mara Field and up the steps for the last time.

The Gaels claimed the AA title with a 16-7 win Thursday, which makes three in four years.

“It’s amazing,” senior attackman Tim Plunkett said. “I mean, obviously, I still go back to sophomore year when we didn’t get it. That still frustrates me, but it’s in the past so I’m so grateful I got to do this with this group of guys. They’re my best friends in the classroom and out here on the field. It’s been a great year, the best in program history and I’m so happy we got it done.”

The Crusaders upset top-seeded Iona Prep here two years ago and went on to a CHSAA state championship.

And they were a nuisance in the early going in this game, too, until the Gaels scored three goals in the final minute of the first quarter to go on top 4-0.

Billy Haggerty netted two of the goals and Drew Hiltsey got one.

There are only four teams in the AA playoffs and Iona Prep thumped all of them during the regular season, which undoubtedly impacts the intensity level at the start.

“It’s hard for me to understand low energy in a championship game,” Gaels coach Rick Trizano said. “When you’re dominating some of the competition, it’s harder for them. Eventually, they put it together, but it does require a bit of yelling.”

Stepinac is getting better and had some moments.

The Crusaders got within three late in the first half, but Haggerty and Plunkett took over after the intermission. They combined for seven goals and five assists, making it a 15-5 advantage with five minutes to play. Plunkett set up Haggerty four times in the fourth quarter and became the program’s career assists leader with 214.

When a play breaks down, they have the kind of next-level chemistry that quickly transforms chaos into celebrations.

“Any time somebody asks, I say (Plunkett) is the best playmaker in the country,” said Haggerty, who’s got more than 200 career goals. “His eyesight and vision are so good. He wants to get everyone goals. My job is kind of easy. I think me and Tim know where we’re going to be before a play happens and that’s the best part. I know he’s going to find me, so I keep cutting and finding open lanes.”

Box score

Stepinac (7-13): Chris Keating 1G, 2A; Nash Mayclim 2G; Hudson Weiser 2G; Andrew Basani 1G; Kiernan Austin 1G, 5GB, 2 CTO; Luke Fehsal 1A, 7GB; Gio Mirable 14/24FO; Cole Fehsal 18S.

Takeaways

Intensity will be a topic again Monday when the Gaels come back to practice following a short break for prom. Iona Prep heads to Kellenberg Memorial on Wednesday for the CHSAA intersectional championship. The Gaels beat the Firebirds 17-8 a week ago. Another win puts Iona Prep in the CHSAA state championship on May 23 against the Monsignor Martin (Buffalo area) winner.

Gaels assistant coach Nick Trizano was the program leader in assists (212) before the game.

“I remember having a good freshman year and looking at the records and I was like, ‘I’m never going beat any of these,’ ” said Plunkett, a UNC signee. “After my junior year Rick came to me and was like, ‘You have a chance.’ To beat any of those records is crazy and I’m super happy I got it done, but it wouldn’t be possible without guys like Billy. I think I have 100 assists just to him alone. This is something that requires two players, so it’s not possible without the other guys on the team moving around and making it work.”

Mamaroneck gets defensive, posts a 10-5 win at Yorktown

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS – It was a good way to get ready for the playoffs.

Mamaroneck will be the undisputed favorite to win Class A when sectionals begin next week. Yorktown is the pick in Class B.

When they are clicking, look out.

The Tigers were dialed in defensively the entire game and manufactured enough offense Saturday to leave Murphy Field with a 10-5 win over the Huskers, who built an early lead, but only scored once in the second half.

Getting the execution level to match the intensity level is something both sides have worked to improve.

They’re getting close.

“Our defense, especially in the second half, showed up,” Mamaroneck midfielder Brian Auker said. “Our goalie, Ben Bacallao played an amazing game. Our poles were great and gave the offense second chances. Obviously, we were playing a great keeper with (Hunter) Mezzatesta in cage, but we need to continue to find that consistency and I think we’re getting better and better each day.”

Frankie Ofrias intercepted a clearing pass, zipped around the crease and finished to cap a quick first-quarter run and give the Huskers a 3-1 lead, but finding the back of the net was not easy over the final 40 minutes.

“I hope we’re ready,” Yorktown coach Tim Schurr said. “One thing I know, our guys play hard and practice hard, so that’s a good thing to have in our favor. We just have to play better. They have excellent players all over the field and the goalie was terrific. … We’ll get more out of this loss than a game where we pulled away. We’ll learn from this.”

Mamaroneck is most dangerous when the goals are coming off pinpoint setups.

Jared Rabina found Auker who gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead with 5:22 to go in the first half and Owen Reese found Nate Kulish for one more before the intermission.

It was a 9-4 lead before Yorktown ended the run.

“We’re getting there,” Mamaroneck defender Henry Doherty said. “We sometimes take breaks, like one side of the ball or the other, so we’ve been working hard in practice, trying to get more consistent so hopefully each game we have going forward is a full game.”

Box score

Mamaroneck (12-3): Nate Kulish 2G; Jared Rabina 2G, 1A; Owen Reese 1G, 1A; Brian Auker 3G; Jude Miesner 2G, 3A; Ethan Gross, Ben Bacallao 11S.

Yorktown (12-4): Frank Ofrias 1G; J.T. Carney 1A; Brady Sheridan 1G, Ryan Fastiggi 1G; Aidan Concannon 1G; Hunter Mezzatesta 14S.

Takeaways

Mamaroneck has one game left against North Rockland, which is a likely playoff opponent. It’s possible the Tigers will not be pushed until they get into the state final four against the Long Island champion. That makes it even more important to go full throttle regardless of the opponent, regardless of the scoreboard.
