A winter storm has swept through Iowa, leaving more than a foot of snow in some parts of the state.
Flurries began falling in Des Moines around 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, and persisted until late in the evening. Here’s a look at the highest snowfall totals in Iowa, according to the National Weather Service.

How much snow did Des Moines get?
Nearly 6 inches of snow fell at the Des Moines International Airport, with the National Weather Service reporting 5.9 inches as of 6 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20.
In Polk City, there were 8.7 inches of snow reported. Other reports from the Des Moines area were between 4-7 inches of snow. Here were the highest snowfall totals among Des Moines metro cities:
How much snow did Ames get?
Ames received 4.4 inches of snow as of 8:15 p.m. on Thursday. Updated totals have not been reported to the NWS since snowfall ended.
What is the forecast in Des Moines?
The forecast doesn’t currently call for more snow in Iowa’s capital city headed into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. However, temperatures are supposed to remain frigid.
The high on Friday is expected to be 27 degrees with a low of 14 degrees and wind chill values as low as 5 degrees.
Saturday, Feb. 21, will be partly sunny, with a high of 17 degrees and wind chill values as low as zero degrees. Saturday night will be clear with a low of 12 degrees.
Sunday, Feb. 22, in Des Moines will be mostly sunny during the day with a high of 23 degrees and a low of 4 degrees at night with wind gusts as high as 24 mph.
