Ominous clouds over Iowa bristled with lightning. In Des Moines, they made for little more than dramatic photos, but they brought downpours of up to 2 inches and the threat of severe weather in southern Iowa.

Where were the highest rainfall totals in Iowa?
Areas across Iowa’s southern counties had heavy downpours overnight, with severe thunderstorm and even tornado warnings issued late into the night. Some also received flash flood warnings. A pocket of northeastern Iowa also saw some rain.

How much rain did Des Moines get?
Des Moines received a trace of rain, according to the mesonet.
Did any tornadoes touch down?
Despite tornado warnings in areas including Pleasantville, Lorimor and rural Cass County, no tornadoes were confirmed to have touched down, according to the National Weather Service storm reports.
Two reports of funnel clouds came just before 10 p.m. Friday from locations near Lorimor, about an hour southwest of Des Moines. Around the same time, there were two reports of funnel clouds made near Sandyville, 9 miles east of Indianola.
One-inch hail was reported just west of Greenfield, the Adair County seat that suffered a devastating tornado in 2024, and 1.5-to-1.75-inch hail was reported in Pleasantville.
The highest recorded wind gust was 70 mph in Knoxville.
Sunny days and rainy nights this week, forecast shows
Saturday will bring sunny skies, followed by more storms, according to the weather service forecast. The evening brings a chance of late showers.
More are expected Sunday, with thunderstorms likely overnight. The sun may peek through the forecast thunderstorms on Monday before possible storms again overnight.
Tuesday will likely be hot and sunny, with a high around 91 and a small chance of storms overnight. Wednesday will be even warmer, with a high expected around 95, also with a chance of storms overnight. The same forecast holds Thursday, with a high of 92.
Friday is expected to have a high around 89 with showers possible during the day.
