Coaches Kolaches, the Texas-style bakery that specializes in the Texas-Czech pastry, plans to close on June 6 after nine years in Urbandale.
Former Iowa State football star Brent “Coach” Curvey grew up in Houston and decided to bring his favorite dish to Des Moines in 2017. Curvey played defensive tackle from 2003 to 2006.
“After much prayer and consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to close Coaches Kolaches. Our final day will be June 6, 2026,” he wrote on Facebook.
“For the past nine years, you’ve supported us, shared meals with us, celebrated milestones with us, and become part of our family. What started as a simple dream grew into something far greater because of this incredible community.”
Curvey said this isn’t goodbye. He plans “to continue doing occasional BBQ pop-ups and kolache pop-ups at some of our favorite local spots, so be sure to follow along for updates on where you can find us next.”
Coaches Kolaches initially opened in 2017 in Clive, moving to its Urbandale location in 2022. Curvey teamed up with friend and Drake University football alum Chris Wilson on the new location.
What is a kolache?
The soft pastries use a slightly sweet yeast dough that’s filled with fruit, sweet cheese or savory fillings such as sausage, jalapenos, cheese, bacon or brisket. Coaches Kolaches offers both varieties.
