The South Bend Police Department announced July 19 that Grant Burkett, 61, of South Bend died from the injuries he suffered when his motorcycle crashed on Michigan Street in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 19.
Around 4:45 a.m. July 19, South Bend Police were called to the area of Michigan Street and Ireland Road on the report of a crashed motorcycle and injured rider, a press release said.
Police said that, upon arrival, officers located Burkett, suffering from serious injuries. He was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to the press release, the initial investigation suggests Burkett was traveling westbound on the St. Joseph Valley Parkway, also known as the U.S. 20 Bypass, and attempted to take the northbound exit onto Michigan Street. Evidence suggests the motorcycle failed to negotiate the curve and ran off the roadway before crashing on Michigan Street, police said.
No other vehicles were involved, the release said.
Burkett’s family has been notified.
The crash remains under investigation, police said.
