Police said that, upon arrival, officers located Burkett, suffering from serious injuries. He was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene.

According to the press release, the initial investigation suggests Burkett was traveling westbound on the St. Joseph Valley Parkway, also known as the U.S. 20 Bypass, and attempted to take the northbound exit onto Michigan Street. Evidence suggests the motorcycle failed to negotiate the curve and ran off the roadway before crashing on Michigan Street, police said.

No other vehicles were involved, the release said.

Burkett’s family has been notified.

The crash remains under investigation, police said.
