Pacers to promote from within to replace Ryan Carr, who left for Indiana basketball

INDIANAPOLIS — The Pacers will be filling the front office vacancy left when Ryan Carr left for Indiana basketball by promoting from within.

A league source confirmed to the IndyStar on Wednesday that Michael Born, the Pacers’ director of college scouting, will be promoted to Carr’s previous position of senior vice president of player personnel. Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype originally reported the news.

Carr was hired by IU in February for a job titled “executive director of basketball,” a position meant to mimic a general manager’s role for the Hoosiers with name, image and likeness rights and revenue sharing having dramatically changed the college sports landscape.

Born has been with the Pacers since 2018 and was promoted to director of college scouting in January of 2025. He played at Iowa State in the 1980s, had a brief professional career, did some coaching at the college and G League level and served in the scouting departments of both the Trail Blazers and Hornets, also serving as Portland’s director of college scouting at one point.

Per the source, decisions have not yet been made to backfill Born’s job.
