Severe thunderstorms swept across Indiana during the evening hours on Monday, April 27. In some areas, the storms caused quite a bit of damage, including downed trees that have impacted homes, power lines and roadways.
“So far there’s been just a lot of damaging wind and hail reports across central Indiana from the storms ranging from yesterday afternoon all the way into the overnight hours,” Meteorologist Cody Moore told IndyStar on Tuesday, April 28.
At this time, a tornado has not been confirmed in central Indiana, but NWS is out surveying the area and we should know more information later this afternoon.
“We do have storm survey teams out right now in a couple of counties south of Indianapolis, but currently nothing has been confirmed as of yet, as our teams are still checking everything out,” Moore said.
Here’s what we know about the storms and their impact around the state so far.

Was there a tornado in Indiana April 27, 2026?
As of 9 a.m. on April 28, a tornado has not been confirmed in Indiana after the April 27 storm, but NWS surveyors are out working today to determine whether or not we had one last night.
“It could be a whole day process depending on how many damage sites that you’re visiting, how far away is it, how long it takes to get there, and sometimes you have road closures depending on where the damage is,” Moore said. “So they can take anywhere from a couple hours to almost the whole day.”
