Richmond man charged after police chase leads to 3-vehicle crash

RICHMOND, IN — A Richmond man faces three criminal charges after he allegedly led police officers on a chase that resulted in a three-vehicle crash.

Investigators said 54-year-old Marcus Lashawn Jackson’s Toyota 4Runner was not directly not involved in the April 23 collision, on 37th Street near the Kroger and Walmart plaza.

Jackson was later apprehended at his home, in the 500 block of South 10th Street.

On Friday, he was charged in Wayne Superior Court 2 with resisting law enforcement, a Level 4 felony carrying up to 12 years in prison, and two misdemeanors, driving while suspended and reckless driving.

An initial hearing in Jackson’s case is set for May 5.

According to an affidavit, two Richmond police detectives tried to pull over Jackson’s SUV after seeing it traveling on East National Road. A chase ensued.

One of the detectives said he was aware Jackson’s driving privileges had been suspended when he saw the Richmond man behind the wheel of the SUV.

The court document said Jackson fled from the officers, running stop signs and at one point driving over a concrete median and traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of East National Road.

When a detective following Jackson entered the intersection on 37the Street leading to the entrance to the shopping plaza, his vehicle was struck by a SUV, and in turn struck a third vehicle.

The detective and the driver of the SUV were taken to Reid Hospital for evaluation of injuries.

Officers later found Jackson and his Toyota 4Runner at the South 10th Street address.

An officer wrote that when he asked Jackson “why he ran from us, he stated he had no idea what I was talking about.”

Jackson, released from the Wayne County Jail after posting bond, is scheduled to appear at an initial hearing on May 5.

According to court records, the Richmond man has been convicted of crimes including dealing in cocaine, possession of cocaine, neglect of a dependent, theft, maintaining a common nuisance, resisting law enforcement, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and driving while suspended.
